City officials in Huntsville, Alabama, have announced that the city has secured $20 million in federal funding to support a key transportation improvement project. The estimated $30 million project will focus on a three-mile stretch of Holmes Avenue that connects downtown Huntsville with the University of Alabama in Huntsville campus and nearby Cummings Research Park.
The project aims to improve safety and accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists. Planned upgrades include new bike lanes, wider sidewalks, improved lighting, landscaping, upgraded crosswalks, and bus stop improvements.
City planners anticipate the changes will make it easier and more inviting for university students and nearby residents to walk or bike between campus, downtown destinations, and surrounding employment centers.
The city will contribute the remaining funding for the project and has approved a contract with Volkert Inc. for design and construction administration services.
Construction is expected to begin in 2027 and take about three years to complete.
