Flower Mound approves $112M to improve parks, trails

May 29, 2025

The city of Flower Mound has approved a $112 million plan to construct park and recreation facilities and improve streets.

The largest portion of the approved bond referendum directs $82 million to build trail systems, enhance parks and convert sports fields. One of the largest investments will be in improving Leonard and Helen Johns Community Park. Under the recently-approved master plan, the city will install five tennis courts, a nature-themed play area, an amphitheater and a fishing pier.

Additional work includes the addition of more trails connected to the existing trail network, building a boardwalk around parts of the park’s pond and creating nature observation areas. The city will prioritize preserving the park’s natural environment in the immediate future. More parking areas and shade pavilions are also included in the master plan.

Flower Mound will renovate and expand the Community Activity Center to better cater to the needs of the community. The existing center covers 60,400 square feet of land. The expansion will result in the indoor facility spanning 115,400 square feet and the new outdoor patio, restrooms and concessions occupying 7,500 square feet.

Improvements include adding a three-court gymnasium, a multipurpose turf gym, a fitness area, fitness ramps and stairs and three aerobic and dance studios. The city will install a control desk, shared outdoor fitness deck, functional fitness areas, party rooms, an indoor playground and a child watch space. The project vision also includes improving the family lifestyle pool, installing seven new universal changing rooms, renovating locker rooms and enhancing the party rooms and classroom.

For the sports field conversion, the city will change the grass soccer field to synthetic turf. The transition will include fencing, drainage, maintenance equipment and goal posts. Twin Coves Park will receive new facilities such as a park office, indoor rental space, expanded camp store,

restrooms and RV sites. Prairie Trail Park will also include a looped trail, picnic pavilion, exercise equipment, play structures, landscaping and an open area for sports.

The city will build trailhead connections between trails and create a 24-hour library self-service area near a fire station. The trail system across Flower Mound will be expanded to add new trails and eliminate gaps.

The remaining $30 million approved in the bond will go toward street reconstruction, improving more than 30 roads.
