The Florida Institute of Technology has received approval for plans to build a new student housing building that would significantly boost the housing capacity.
The proposed 212,000 sq. ft. housing complex would be located in Melbourne, at the corner of South Babcock Street and University Boulevard, on what is currently an athletic field.
Florida Tech says the 6-story building would feature a total of 555 beds. The housing units would be apartment-style, with one-, two-, three- and four-bedroom floor plans with full kitchens.
The complex would also feature a classroom area, multiple study and lounge areas, multi-purpose room, e-bicycle parking and two outdoor courtyard areas that incorporate outdoor dining and recreation.
In December, the Melbourne Planning and Zoning Board voted unanimously to recommend approval of Florida Tech’s plan.
The Melbourne City Council approved the plan on January 14. Construction is expected to begin in 2025, with completion expected in 2026.
Government Market News has reached out to Florida Tech for a more detailed timeline and we will update this story when that becomes available.
