Federal grants target scientific cyberinfrastructure research

March 24, 2025

The National Science Foundation (NSF) is awarding up to $12 million to support cyberinfrastructure. The foundation seeks to advance scientific discovery and innovation through its Cybersecurity Innovation for Cyberinfrastructure (CICI) program.

The NSF anticipates funding between 12 and 20 projects across four distinct program areas:

  1. Usable and Collaborative Security for Science (UCSS): Awards of up to $600,000 each over three years to support projects enhancing the usability and collaboration aspects of cybersecurity in scientific research.
  1. Reference Scientific Security Datasets (RSSD): Grants of up to $600,000 each over three years to develop datasets that serve as benchmarks for scientific security research.
  1. Transition to Cyberinfrastructure Resilience (TCR): Funding of up to $1.2 million per award over three years to bolster the resilience of cyberinfrastructure against evolving security threats.
  1. Integrity, Provenance, and Authenticity for Artificial Intelligence Ready Data (IPAAI): Awards of up to $900,000 each over three years to ensure the integrity and authenticity of data prepared for artificial intelligence applications.

The estimated number of awards per program area is as follows:

  • UCSS: 3-6 awards
  • RSSD: 2-5 awards
  • TCR: 2-4 awards
  • IPAAI: 4-6 awards

The CICI program supports the development, deployment and integration of cybersecurity solutions that benefit the broader scientific community. These efforts focus on securing scientific data, computation, collaborations, workflows and infrastructure.

Previously funded projects range from efforts to safeguard AI in bioinformatics to security architecture for research computing. Full proposals are due by April 2, 2025.
