Profiles in Power highlights public officials nationwide who are improving their communities through their dedication, enthusiasm, creativity, and experience.
This week’s profile is Kelly Keel, Executive Director, Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.
Public career highlights and education: My career at TCEQ started 23 years ago and I’ve served in several capacities throughout the agency. Prior to my current position, I was the Director of the Office of Administrative Services where I oversaw TCEQ’s information technology, human resources, budget and financial functions. I’m a proud graduate of Texas A&M University with a Bachelor of Science in Economics and a Master of Public Service and Administration from the Bush School.
What I like best about my public service is: I feel like throughout my career, I have been able to make an impact. Whether building a department, improving processes or leading the agency, there’s always an opportunity to help our state grow and prosper.
The best advice I’ve received: “Don’t let perfection be the enemy of good.” We don’t have to be perfect to achieve all of the things we can and need to. In the end, it’s not all dependent on one individual, but the broad shoulders of the whole team or agency.
People might be surprised to know that: I’ve held many positions at TCEQ. This is a great agency and I’ve been fortunate to participate in a number of aspects. I think it helps with my problem-solving perspective on issues we tackle.
One thing I wish more people knew about the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality is: The people, both at TCEQ and the ones we help. We have a strong ability to help, whether in disaster cleanup, supporting a water system during a boil notice or guiding the permitting process. So many times, people don’t realize there is an entire organization working to make sure we are safe, healthy and protected.
