Corpus Christi awarded federal grant to replace transit facility

December 17, 2025

The Corpus Christi Regional Transportation Authority (CCRTA) has been selected to receive $46.3 million in federal dollars to build a maintenance facility. While the construction date has not yet been released, officials anticipate the building will open within the next two years.

The state-of-the-art, climate-controlled facility would provide the authority with the support needed to maintain its transit fleet in the face of extreme weather. The new building will replace the city’s existing 50-year-old maintenance facility.

The completed building will help speed up repair work, protect equipment from the elements and ensure all buses are kept up-to-par with safety and reliability standards. The facility will feature:

  • 21 work bays for maintenance and repairs.
  • Areas for parts and receiving, electronics work and facilities upkeep.
  • Climate-controlled environments to protect technicians and reduce lost workdays.
  • Training areas to support workforce development and safe operations.

Corpus Christi’s infrastructure is frequently threatened by extreme weather, including hurricanes, severe storms and flooding that pose significant risks to grid, emergency and transportation infrastructure. The new maintenance facility will ensure the city’s public transit network will have uninterrupted operations during emergency situations.

Delivered through the Infrastructure Act, the funding represents a significant boon for Corpus Christi as one of the recipients featured in the Federal Transit Administration’s (FTA) $2 billion investment in modernizing transit bus infrastructure. City officials noted that Corpus Christi was in competition with around five other larger cities and communities for a share of the funding.
