The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) is moving forward with a new design for the $32 million Hawthorne Crossing bridge project in the city of Bend. Construction is expected to begin in 2028.
The upcoming Hawthorne Crossing will provide a multimodal option for residents to easily access the downtown area and other essential amenities. The structure will be an overpass over both the railroad and Bend Parkway, offering safe passage for bicyclists, pedestrians and those who use mobility devices.
The city recently unveiled the final design for the bridge, planning a truss-style design that resembles three mountain peaks. The bridge will provide a wide 18-foot shared-use path for non-motorized travelers.
Plans include building landings that connect to nearby streets to provide travelers with a place to rest on the uphill and downhill ramps. The project will include various related street improvements on both approaches to either side of the bridge.
The bridge approaches will include raised intersections with large corner curbs to increase pedestrian-area visibility. The project vision also calls for planting areas to slow traffic and increase the area’s aesthetic appeal and available shade. ODOT plans to conduct studies for connecting the bridge to the existing roadway network, which will be completed in future projects.
