Aurora approves $95M in bonds for public works projects

June 20, 2025

Aurora, a suburb near Chicago, will sell up to $95 million in bonds this month to provide funding for construction projects related to public safety, public works, transportation infrastructure and improvements to outdoor amenities.

The tax-exempt general obligation bonds will pay for the Illinois city’s relocation of Fire Station 9, a new Fire Station 13, a new fire department headquarters building, renovations to RiverEdge Park, a new Public Works facility and roadway improvements on Farnsworth Avenue and Bilter Road.

Funds from the sale will be available after the sale closes in July.

Projects include:

  • $35 million to build a new fire department headquarters building that will serve as Fire Station 4 and the Emergency Operations Center. It will house administrative offices for the fire department and the city’s emergency management agency and will be located on the same site as the police department to create the Aurora Public Safety Campus.
  • $18 million for the RiverEdge Park renovation. Work will include a new backstage, a new entry on the southern edge of the park, a new beverage pavilion, a new VIP section and new restrooms.
  • $18 million for road improvements to Farnsworth Avenue, Bilter Road and Church Road, where Hollywood Casino is relocating.
  • $7 million to build Fire Station 9.
  • $6 million for construction of the Public Works Building.
  • $4 million to build Fire Station 13.

While work is underway on some of these projects, there may be additional opportunities to collaborate, city officials said.
