The Wisconsin Department of Transportation is planning several improvements along a vital corridor through the city of Kiel.
The proposed improvements are located along a 1.5-mile stretch of WIS 32, linking the city with regional centers such as Sheboygan, Green Bay and Milwaukee.
The largest planned change is a roundabout to replace the current intersection at County AA, which officials expect will ease traffic flow and improve turning safety. Along the highway, the plan calls for new pavement, curbs, gutters, sidewalks, water and sewer mains, storm drains and other utilities.
On Water Street, the plan would restrict parking to one side and add bike lanes on both sides. On First Street a bridge would be replaced and driving lanes narrowed to allow wider shoulders. On Fremont Street Lane, widths would be reduced to make space for bike and parking lanes. On Seventh Street, the road width would stay the same while curb ramps would be rebuilt.
The project’s goal is to deliver a smoother roadway, lower city maintenance costs, and extend the life of pavement and structures. The roundabout, ADA-compliant curb ramps and improved bike and pedestrian access, along with traffic calming features are planned to create safer conditions for all users.
A public meeting was held Oct. 1 to present the plan and gather feedback. Additional public and stakeholder input will be accepted through Nov. 1.
An environmental document is underway and expected by December 2025. Real estate acquisitions for right of way are scheduled from 2026 through 2028, final design in 2028 and construction in 2029 and 2030.
