Saluting Texas Lone Stars: Marie Cohan — Statewide Digital Accessibility Officer, Department of Information Resources

June 18, 2025

My public career highlights and education:

Being recognized by the Governor’s Commission for Women as an Outstanding Woman in Texas Government was a huge honor. There have been so many opportunities to learn with the state and to share that knowledge with others.

The best part of public service:

I like serving my community and my fellow state employees. The best part of working for the state is when I work with other public sector entities who want to emulate Texas’ policies and practices…that’s a testament to the work of all state of Texas employees.

Some of the best advice you have ever received:

The best advice I’ve been given has been received through observing other leaders in my agency. Through their example, I have learned to listen more and to determine the root cause when problem-solving.

Something I wish more people knew about my division of government:

Some don’t know what the Department of Information Resources (DIR) does. DIR leads technology strategy and operations for the state. We also provide security, procurement, and telecommunication services, and my program supports digital accessibility in Texas which ensures state technology is usable by all Texans.

A current project or initiative that I am working on:

I’m currently working to educate the state and local government and education agencies in Texas on the new web accessibility rule. There is a new rule under the Americans with Disabilities Act that requires state and local websites and mobile applications to be usable by all.

One thing outside of government service people may not know about me:

I love to travel.
