Ohio launches fourth innovation hub to research 3D printing for aerospace, defense manufacturing

March 14, 2025

Ohio will launch the state’s fourth innovation hub in Youngstown, leveraging $62 million in local, state, federal and private investments to advance aerospace and defense manufacturing technologies.

The Youngstown Innovation Hub for Aerospace and Defense will research and develop additive manufacturing solutions – more commonly known as 3D printing. To date, applications of this technology have transformed the production of military equipment by quickly creating complex and customized parts. America Makes, a public-private partnership with the U.S. Department of Defense, will lead the innovation hub. Additional project partners include the city of Youngstown, Youngstown State University, the Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber and the Youngstown Business Incubator among other participants.

To facilitate additive manufacturing practices, the leading organizations will renovate a building on West Front Street, installing complex 3D printing equipment to attract relevant manufacturing companies. The innovation hub will provide the necessary programs needed to upskill the state’s workforce and prepare future workers with skills and knowledge relevant to advancing the hub’s goals and initiatives.

Leaders expect the hub to yield about $161.6 million in economic impact and create 450 jobs by 2029. The initiative will also create approximately 185 STEM credential opportunities and 40 internship opportunities. Cutting-edge technologies advanced through the hub are anticipated to expand beyond aerospace and defense, impacting sectors including energy, medical devices, construction and semiconductors. The Ohio Innovation Hubs Program, led by the Ohio Department of Development, supports the creation of the innovation hub to spur investment outside Ohio’s primary metro areas. The Youngstown Innovation Hub for Aerospace and Defense follows three institutions created in 2024:

  • The Northwest Ohio Glass Innovation Hub near Toledo.
  • The onMain Innovation Hub in Dayton.
  • The Greater Akron Polymer Innovation Hub.
