Community Unit School District 200 (CUSD 200) – located in Wheaton, Illinois – will invest $151.5 million in comprehensive improvements and repairs to three of its educational institutions. These projects will enhance safety and security campus wide, improve accessibility, reinforce infrastructure and modernize facilities.
The Edison, Franklin and Monroe middle schools will all receive similar improvements, dedicated to modernizing the learning experience for all students. This will include comprehensive renovations and replacements for facility infrastructure. The district plans to replace flooring, wall bases, ceilings and lighting across all educational facilities and spaces.
Additional work will update furnishings, install instructional technologies, replace doors and hardware and update mechanical, HVAC, fire sprinkler and water heater systems. Districtwide safety and security enhancements will include updates to building entry, camera, closed circuit television, automated clock and intercom systems.
The Library Learning Centers will be renovated to create dynamic spaces for studying and collaboration. The improvements will include flexible furnishings to enable space reconfiguration, low bookshelves and renovated maker spaces. The district will improve the performing arts spaces by building acoustically insulated small and section practice rooms, enhancing the auditorium infrastructure, improving storage rooms and relocating classroom spaces to new building additions.
Renovation and expansion plans are slated for the school gymnasiums. As part of the gym expansion, the district will install retractable bleachers, athletic equipment and air conditioning. The bathrooms and locker rooms will also be improved for better accessibility. This will include replacing plumbing fixtures and toilet partitions. Additional work will involve removing unused showers and relocating locker rooms.
CUSD 200 will build right-sized classrooms to support science education, as well as shared prep rooms, mobile worktables, stations and lab utilities. The exploratory labs will also be renovated, converting them into flexible, multi-use elective space with dedicated appliances, equipment and utilities to support new programs.
The administrative support areas across all three schools will be reconfigured, renovated or relocated. Relocated areas will be placed near the building’s entry, while all counselors, social workers, wellness coordinator and psychologist offices will be centralized. The nurse’s offices will also be relocated and expanded to provide more treatment cots and private exam rooms.
