Bids sought for airport expansion project in Nebraska

February 13, 2025

The Norfolk Airport Authority is seeking bids to build a new $8.86 million general aviation terminal and aircraft storage hangar at the Norfolk Regional Airport in Norfolk, Nebraska.

Construction is expected to begin in summer 2025, with an anticipated ribbon cutting in fall 2026.

The project includes:

  • Increasing the terminal building from 1,500 square feet to 5,833 square feet.
  • Adding modern amenities, including a passenger lobby, pilot lounge, conference room, modern restrooms, kitchenette, break room and staff offices, providing a better experience for flight crews, airport staff and visitors
  • Expanding the hangar from 4,800 square feet to 9,500 square feet, which would increase the ability to accommodate larger business and agricultural aircraft.

The airport has secured more than half the funding needed for the project. The remaining funding will be sourced from airport revenues and bonds.

The Airport Authority had a bond levy that ran from 2004-2019. The initial estimated tax impact of the project to the average Norfolk homeowner is $29 per year, decreasing over 20 years, the authority said.

“We are excited about this project and its positive impact on our community,” Acting Airport Manager Grayson Frohberg said. “With anticipated federal funds covering over half of the estimated project cost, the time to act is now to provide the best value.”

The airport’s role in northeast Nebraska includes supporting agricultural spraying operations, air cargo, and business travel, the authority said.
