Dave DoolittleThe U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is making up to $500 million available for basic research initiatives that support clean energy, economic growth and national security. The funds, available through the DOE’s Office of Science, will advance priorities such as advanced scientific computing, fusion energy, high energy physics and nuclear physics.
The funding is available through the Office of Science’s annual Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO), which was previously known as a Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA). This year’s NOFO allows research institutions to apply for financial support in areas not covered by other specific solicitations.

Beginning Oct. 1, the DOE has updated terminology in compliance with federal regulations, renaming FOAs as NOFOs.
The NOFO, entitled “FY 2025 Continuation of Solicitation for the Office of Science Financial Assistance Program,” will remain open until Sept. 30, 2025. Various review panels could require applicants to submit re-applications to be required for consideration.
The Office of Science is the largest federal supporter of basic research in the physical sciences, overseeing 10 national laboratories and funding university research.
This year’s funding opportunity is part of the DOE’s broader efforts to enhance U.S. leadership in scientific research while addressing national needs in energy security and environmental sustainability.
