This week’s profile is Edwin Miranda, chief information officer/IT director for Newark, California.
Public career highlights: I spent 14 years in leadership roles in cities such as Anaheim, Fremont and Newark, along with 21 years in IT at private sector companies. I am also immediate past president of the Municipal Information Systems Association of California (MISAC) and current State Board of Director.
What I like best about public service: I value service, innovation and making a meaningful impact to the community through technology. I was drawn to public service in city government, particularly in IT, to directly contribute to improving public services, especially in the areas of public safety and improving infrastructure management through solutions that can have a tangible impact on residents’ lives.
The best advice I’ve ever received: My father and many relatives are retired U.S. Navy veterans, and I was inducted into the United States Naval Academy upon graduation from high school. I’m reminded of the “Make Your Bed” speech where U.S. Navy Admiral William McRaven says that making your bed every morning can help you start your day with a sense of accomplishment and pride, which can motivate you to complete other tasks. He goes on to say that it can set the tone for the rest of your day and instill discipline.
People might be interested to know that: Being a lifelong martial artist, especially having started training at a young age and having experience as both a student and instructor, brings a multitude of benefits that positively impact various aspects of life. Not only are there physical and health benefits, but I highlight self-discipline and focus.
One thing I wish people knew about city government: The City of Newark has recently adopted a Technology Master Plan and Broadband Master Plan aimed at strategically guiding its technological advancements. These plans are pivotal in shaping the city’s future initiatives, including the deployment of advanced cameras to bolster public safety measures, the enhancement of collaboration through a modernized telephone system, and the improvement of broadband infrastructure and communication networks citywide.
