Miles SmithA draft of the Michigan Department of Transportation’s new $15.3 billion five-year transportation program is now available for public comment.
The five-year plan contains a list of planned projects for the MDOT Highway Program through 2029, including state-maintained roads, bridges and facilities and information on the public transportation, rail and aeronautics programs.
The plan must be delivered to the Michigan Legislature by March 1. It serves as a foundation for the biennial State Transportation Improvement Program and is considered when developing the state budget.
The public comment period will be open through Sept. 3, MDOT said.
The draft plan includes:
- $10.6 billion in highway program projects focused primarily on repairing and rebuilding MDOT roads and bridges, with $270 million in funding from the state’s $3.5 billion Rebuilding Michigan program contributing to that total.
- $3.6 billion for the Public Transportation Program, covering local bus, intercity bus, marine passenger, vanpooling, port, freight rail, and passenger rail.
- $1 billion for the Aeronautics Program, including federal, state, and local aviation programs.
- A list of trunkline Highway Program construction projects by county planned for state and/or federal funding over the next five years.
- Highlights on MDOT initiatives that relate to transportation equity and inclusion, transportation resiliency, complete streets/mobility, and upcoming enhancements to the capital program development process.
