Strategic PartnershipsThe U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Department of Energy (DOE) are making $9.4 million available for technology projects that improve the performance of biofuels and make production more efficient.
The funds come from the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) and will be administered by DOE’s Bioenergy Technologies Office.
“Investing in bioenergy technologies provides a path forward to meet the growing demand for sustainable aviation fuel and other low-carbon biofuels,” Jeff Marootian, DOE Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, said in a statement. “This joint DOE and EPA investment in a clean energy future is a great example of interagency partnership to further President Biden’s whole-of-government approach to tackling the climate crisis.”
Eligible projects include those that enhance the necessary processes in advanced biofuel production and those that test innovations for biointermediates (raw materials that go from one facility to another to be converted into renewable fuel).
Domestic businesses, educational institutions, and nonprofits are eligible to apply. The deadline to submit concept papers is March 22, 2024, and full applications are due May 24.
