Stormwater project to alleviate flooding risk in Alexandria

Virginia – Repeated flooding in the city of Alexandria is being addressed with the combination of two large capacity projects. A $50 million project, now in design, will increase storm sewer capacity and convey runoff from larger storms.

A design team is currently working to address identified weaknesses near key project roadway intersections. Larger features will include parallel relief sewers, a new outfall to discharge flows and green infrastructure to ensure water quality to the watershed.

The design contractor is currently working on completing a detailed site survey, storm sewer modeling and construction drawing. Construction is expected to start in 2026 and be completed by 2028.

Funding for the project is provided through the Stormwater Utility, Community Flood Preparedness Fund (CFPF) Grant.
